Why build your future at Illinois State University?

Work experience while you study

Work in the United States after graduation with Optional Practical Training (OPT).

You can apply for OPT to work in your field for 12 months. If you studied a STEM-designated degree, you could qualify for the STEM OPT extension. This allows you to work in the US for an additional two years. With STEM OPT, you can work in the US for up to three years.

Gain work experience while studying with Curricular Practical Training (CPT).

You can apply for CPT to work in a job that is connected to your degree program. CPT lets you gain hands-on experience while you are still a student. The work must be part of your curriculum — such as an internship, co-op or practicum. You can work part-time during the semester or full-time during breaks.

Gain professional experience and financial support with a Graduate Assistantship.

Graduate Assistantships are available to students enrolled in a graduate program at Illinois State University. You’ll receive a monthly stipend and a tuition waiver for the fall and spring semesters. In some cases, a summer tuition waiver is also available.

You may work in teaching, research or professional support roles for 10 to 20 hours each week. These positions give you valuable experience in your field and help you build your professional network.
